Reimbursement 101: Understanding Coding and Billing for STI/HIV Services

Most local health department STI and HIV programs have never even considered billing but based on the current funding landscape and political uncertainties, many providers are interested in learning more about coding and billing both for state Medicaid programs and commercial health plans.

This webinar will begin with a detailed description of national coding conventions, followed by several clinical case studies that will review many of the nuances of correct coding and billing. The session is appropriate for clinicians, clinic administrators, and billers and will include both basic and intermediate level case studies. In addition, recommendations will be offered regarding excellent on-line programs and job aids specifically tailored to sexual and reproductive health.

    Learning objectives:

    • Describe the two acceptable approaches to computing the level of E/M coding for each visit
    • Explain how to code a visit that includes a diagnosis, in-office procedure, and unrelated counseling
    • Provide 4 examples of HCPCS and CPT codes for clinic-dispensed drugs and devices
    • Describe how to code for a well-person (preventive medicine) visit
